Teen Inventors Create Salt-Powered Refrigerator to Aid Rural Healthcare

Three teenagers from Indore, India—Dhruv Chaudhary, Mithran Ladhania, and Mridul Jain—have developed an innovative, electricity-free refrigerator named Thermavault.

This device utilizes a chemical reaction between specific salts and water to absorb heat, maintaining internal temperatures between 2°C and 6°C, ideal for preserving vaccines and medicines. In advanced versions, the Thermavault can achieve subzero temperatures, potentially suitable for storing transplant organs.

The trio’s invention addresses the challenge of keeping medical supplies cool in remote areas lacking reliable electricity.

Their efforts earned them the 2025 Earth Prize and a $12,500 award, which they are using to produce 200 units for testing in 120 hospitals across India. The Thermavault’s design allows for the salt solution to be reused by boiling off the water and reclaiming the salt, making it a sustainable solution for rural healthcare needs.
