First UK Baby Born After Womb Transplant Marks Historic Medical Milestone
📅 2025-05-20

Grace Davidson, a 36-year-old NHS dietitian from north London, has become the first woman in the United Kingdom to give birth following a womb transplant.

Diagnosed in her teens with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome—a rare condition resulting in an underdeveloped or absent uterus—Davidson received a womb from her older sister, Amy Purdie, in an eight-hour surgical procedure in 2023.

After undergoing fertility treatment to create embryos, one was successfully implanted, leading to the birth of her daughter, Amy Isabel, via planned caesarean section in February 2025.

The baby’s name honors both her aunt and the transplant surgeon, Isabel Quiroga. This groundbreaking event is the culmination of 25 years of research led by Professor Richard Smith and represents a significant advancement in reproductive medicine.

While the procedure, costing approximately ÂŁ25,000, is currently funded by the charity Womb Transplant UK, there is hope that the NHS may support such transplants in the future. With over 100 womb transplants performed worldwide resulting in at least 50 births, this success offers new hope to women with similar conditions.
